Do Mental Health Conditions Run in Families?

The hands of family members hold a block sign that reads “therapy.”

Saber Psychiatry follows a client-centered approach to psychiatric care and treatment. That means that we evaluate and treat each patient based on their unique needs and use carefully cultivated treatment algorithms for medication to achieve the most favorable outcomes for our patients.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), many mental disorders are caused by a combination of biological, environmental, psychological, and genetic factors. It has been found that certain genes and gene variations are associated with mental health conditions.

Know Your Family Health History

Consulting with a mental health professional can help you understand risk factors and preventative factors. If a family member develops a mental health condition, it does not mean that you will also develop one, but certain mental health disorders run in families, so a close relative with a mental health disorder may place you at a higher risk. Knowing your family health history can help your doctor recommend actions for reducing your risk and help you identify early signs of a mental health condition.

If you or a loved one is struggling with their mental health, we can help. Saber Psychiatry is currently accepting new patients ages 2 to 65. Call our offices at 615.678.7839 to schedule an appointment.
