Body Dysmorphic Disorder in Males
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) strikes men and women at the same rate, and it is surprisingly common, making life difficult for about 1 in every 100 people.
While most of us notice what we think of as flaws in our appearance (deviations from ideals), BDD gets in the way of normal functioning. People who have BDD may avoid social functions, spend several hours a day worrying about their appearance, or become severely depressed.
In adolescents and adult men, BDD is more likely to present as anxiety over muscle development than in girls/women.
People who have BDD usually know what they look like; they may, for example, know that they are more muscular and leaner than most men, but they worry excessively over deviations from what they believe is the ideal.
BDD usually starts in adolescence. People who suffer from BDD fear that their concerns are vanity, so they try to hide their anxieties. Psychiatrists suspect that BDD is underdiagnosed, especially in males.
Symptoms include:
- Constant checking in the mirror OR avoiding mirrors
- Attempts to hide body parts under clothing or hats
- Excessive amounts of exercise or grooming (to the point that it interferes with work, school, or social life)
- Magnifying small deviations (such as whether muscle development is symmetrical, minor weight changes, normal signs of aging)
- Avoiding social activities
- Seeing many healthcare or fitness professionals
- Several cosmetic procedures
- Depression, anxiety, or shame over appearance
Risk factors include:
- History of being bullied over one’s appearance
- Family history of BDD
- History or family history of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
Saber Psychiatry uses cognitive-behavioral approaches, sometimes with the addition of medication, to treat BDD.
