We often hear people say that they or co-workers are “OCD about …,” and while we know that it’s a joke, we cringe internally. Mental illnesses are disorders because they interfere with daily functioning.
Many careers/jobs and hobbies require intense focus and attention to detail. No one wants a mechanic to have a couple of pieces left over after reassembling an engine. If you’re baking a cake for your son’s wedding, you want that cake to taste wonderful and look beautiful. You want your surgeon to keep track of what she’s doing.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder is an illness where people have unwanted thoughts or sensations (obsessions); to manage these obsessions, they feel driven to do repetitive behaviors (compulsions) such as counting things, handwashing, and checking actions (such as repeatedly checking on whether a door is locked). Not performing the action causes immense distress, often including fears that something terrible will happen to themselves or loved ones.
Symptoms interfere with work, school, social life, and other daily functions.
People who have OCD:
- Can’t control the thoughts or behaviors
- Often recognize that the thoughts or behaviors are unrealistic or extreme
- Spend at least one hour each day on these thoughts and behaviors
- Have symptoms on more days than not
- Don’t enjoy the behaviors, but do get brief relief from the anxieties
- Often diagnosed in adolescence or early adulthood
- May start showing symptoms in childhood
- Experience substantial problems in daily functioning
- Often have a depressive disorder
- May have body dysmorphic disorder (BDD)
- May have a family history of depression or anxiety
- May have developed OCD as part of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), such as active military duty, accidents, or violence
Ample Hope for People Who Have OCD
Psychotherapy, frequently combined with medication, is successful in treating OCD more often than not. No one can guarantee that treatment will get rid of the OCD symptoms, but treatment is often successful.
