There is no period in our lives where we’re guaranteed to have it all together. No matter how you define “it all” or “together,” every phase of life brings challenges.
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) defines mental illness as any emotional, psychological, or behavioral disorder. The severity ranges widely, from having no practical effect to causing severe impairment.
For example, many people thrive with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder[SS1] (ADHD), using their ability to hyper-focus to their advantage. Other people, however, find schoolwork or other kinds of training to be unmanageable and have poor impulse control in other areas, leading to poor choices across the varying facets of their lives.
NIMH estimates that in the United States:
Over 22% of adults have been diagnosed with a mental disorder (you are not alone!)
While the prevalence of mental illness does decrease from early adulthood (19-25) to those aged 50 and older (15%), it is never minimal (help is always available)
Young children also suffer from mental illness; NIMH estimates that in the U.S.:
9.8% of children are diagnosed with ADHD
9.4% suffer from anxiety
8.9% show developmentally inappropriate behavior problems
4.4% have depression
For both children and adults, having one disorder increases the likelihood of having another; for example, depression and anxiety often occur together.
Mental health affects how we think, feel, and act. It influences how we handle stress, relate to other people, and make healthy choices. Healthy mental functioning is important from early childhood to adolescence to late adulthood. We all deserve healthy functioning.
