Bullying is a term used to describe repeated aggressive behavior, typically carried out by an individual or a group, with the intention of causing harm, distress, or discomfort to another person who is often perceived as weaker or more vulnerable. It involves a power imbalance, where the person or group engaging in bullying behavior holds some form of power or advantage over the target.
Stop Bullying.gov describes bullying as follows:
Verbal bullying is behavior that uses demeaning language to intimidate or humiliate the victim.
Social bullying involves manipulating relationships, spreading rumors, excluding someone from social groups, or damaging their reputation. Cyberbullying takes place online through digital means, such as social media platforms, emails, instant messaging, or other digital communication channels.
Physical bullying involves physically hurting or threatening to hurt someone, damaging their belongings, or engaging in any form of physical aggression.
Cyberbullying is a newer form of bullying that takes place on an electronic device, but bullying can also be physical, verbal, or social.
Regardless of the frequency of the bullying behavior, when such behaviors become persistent, intentional, and involve a power imbalance, they are considered bullying. The consequences of bullying can be severe, leading to emotional distress, low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and in extreme cases, even self-harm or suicide. If someone in your family has been the victim of bullying and is struggling, seek professional help right away.
