The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) estimates that 3 to 5% of people will suffer from Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) at least once in their lives. Spotlight on Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
Everyone worries. We worry about the health of family members, our jobs, and whether the traffic will ever ease up. We worry about the odd noise coming from the dishwasher, the electric bill, and what the cat has thrown up. These worries are normal. It’s when worries start interfering with daily functioning that the anxiety becomes a mental health problem: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD).
People who have GAD often worry about:
- Health
- Finances
- Death
- Family
- Relationships
- Work
- School
Psychiatrists and other clinicians have scales to determine the severity of GAD when we suspect this diagnosis fits.
Symptoms include:
- Excessive, uncontrollable, and often irrational worries about events/activities
- Restlessness
- Trouble sleeping
- Exhaustion
- Irritability
- Sweating
- Trembling
To qualify as GAD, the symptoms must:
- Be present on more days than they are absent
- Persist for at least 6 months
- Be consistent
Risk factors include:
- Family history of GAD
- Trauma
- Substance abuse
- Obesity
- Other psychiatric disorders (especially major depression)
Saber Psychiatry treats GAD with behavioral, cognitive, and medical approaches (alone or in combination).
GAD can be debilitating, but it is treatable. Call our Saber Psychiatry team at 615-678-7839.
