Spotlight on Phobias
A phobia is an irrational fear of things, animals/people or situations that persists despite the person’s awareness that the thing/situation/X is not dangerous. It is not a typical aversion. A person can be afraid of snakes, for example, but is not phobic if she/he is willing to go outdoors, or can look at photographs of snakes.
People who have phobias:
- Typically experience rapid onsets of fear/anxiety
- Suffer for at least six (6) months from the phobia
- Go to great lengths to avoid the situation/object
- Experience significant distress that may include:
- Panic attacks
- Fainting
- Hyperventilating
- Crying
- Often have more than one phobia
Social phobias and agoraphobia (fear of open or public spaces) are best treated with counseling that often includes exposure therapy. Medication may be helpful as well. Specific phobias, such as snakes, heights, or spiders) are best treated with counseling and/or exposure therapy.
