Rely on Saber Psychiatry for Comprehensive Psychiatric Assessment & Care: 615.678.7839

Your first visit will include an evaluation, which is an interview that lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. Because every person’s situation is unique, do not be alarmed if the assessment lasts longer or shorter than this estimate.

When we assess minors, we include a parent, guardian, or other responsible adult. People who have reduced capacity – such as adults who have dementia – may need to have caregivers present as well.

Medical diagnoses rely on patient or guardian descriptions, and psychiatry is no exception. Patients and guardians must, therefore, provide honest answers. There is no reason to be embarrassed. We use interview answers to develop a diagnosis that best fits the symptoms. We also use your interviews and other assessments to develop treatments.

Questions may include:

  • Do you have any history of substance abuse?
  • Has anyone in your family committed suicide?
  • Do you have a family history of mental illness?
  • What was your childhood like?
  • Do you have any history of being abused?
  • Have you had any significant medical conditions or surgery in the past?
  • Do you have panic attacks?
  • Have you been struggling to fall asleep or stay asleep? How often do you wake up tired? How often do you struggle to fall asleep?
  • Have you ever been diagnosed or treated for any mental illness?
  • Do you have any guns or access to guns?
  • Do you have trouble controlling moods or behaviors?
  • Have you been fired from a job or expelled from school?

Assessments may include additional testing such as sleep labs or other medical evaluations.
