What is Family Therapy? When is it Helpful?
Family therapy, also called Family Systems Therapy, originated in the late 1960s. The primary developer was Dr. Murray Bowen. Bowen recognized that we function within emotional and social systems, so treating problems within the system often leads to better results.
Family therapy focuses on the family members as well as the individual.
Psychiatrists and other treatment providers may provide one-on-one sessions as well as sessions with every family in a session.
Family therapy helps:
- Individuals understand how their behaviors affect everyone else
- People see how their behaviors are perceived, not how they are meant
- Teach family members how to cope with stresses such as disabilities or disasters
- Provide skills for coping with stresses
- Improve communication
- Understand and handle problems
- Create a better functioning environment
When you or a family member needs psychiatric care, call Saber at 615.678.7839. We offer both in-person and telehealth visits.
