Sleep is Not a Luxury!
There is nothing to be admired about forgoing sleep.
While people vary in the amount of sleep we need, we also tend to overestimate how well we function on reduced sleep. Perhaps that is why so many people – about half — who have been diagnosed with sleep disorders (such as sleep apnea) refuse to help themselves (according to the American Sleep Association).
Insufficient quality sleep leads to:
- Tiredness (well, yeah, but it gets worse)
- Irritability, difficulty handling stress
- Word-finding difficulties
- Lack of concentration
- Forgetfulness and reduced ability to form new memories
- Depression
- Weight gain, trouble losing weight
- Obesity
- Cardiac disorders (heart disease, hypertension, heart attacks, strokes)
- Lower-performing immune system
- Migraines
- Decreased ability to recover from injuries or illnesses
- Clumsiness
- Decreased creativity
- Impaired decision making
- Slower reaction times (think of how often you need to think quickly while driving)
While it takes the body to recover from a chronic lack of sleep, we can – and do – recover our health after we establish healthy sleep patterns.
Sleep Studies/Assessment
Sleep disorders may be a function of:
- Breathing disorders, such as sleep apnea
- Undiagnosed/untreated seizures
- Movement disorders (such as restless leg syndrome, or other limb movement disorders)
- Depression, anxiety
- Hunger
- Physical discomfort (back pain, uncomfortable sleeping positions, the wrong kind of mattress, noise, too much …)
- Narcolepsy
- Circadian rhythm disorders
- Sleepwalking, night terrors, bed-wetting
- Bruxism (teeth grinding)
- Shift-work sleep disorder
- Disruption in the REM/non-REM sleep cycle (we move between Rapid Eye Movement – dream – sleep and non-dream sleep)
At Saber Psychiatry, we provide assessments and sleep studies to help figure out the cause(s) for your lack of sleep. Call us at 615.678.7839, so we can help you can on the road to wellness.
