Abbreviations, Acronyms, and Initialisms

You may have seen a tureen of alphabet soup used to describe mental health and related conditions without having seen the explanations. Here are three of the common ones.

ADD/HD (also ADD, ADD-HD) Attention Deficit Disorder with or without Hyperactivity Disorder

Children who have ADD/HD grow up to be adults who have ADD/HD. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that approximately 11% of school children and teenagers have ADD/HD; until recently, most adults were diagnosed after their children were diagnosed; the parents (and sometimes the physicians) realized that the children’s and parents’ behaviors were similar. ADD/HD cannot be diagnosed by teachers, neighbors, nannies, or anyone but trained physicians (psychiatrists). ADD/HD often went undiagnosed in children who did well in school and in girls who were usually socialized to be less impulsive than boys. While mediation is helpful to some people who live with ADD/HD, it is not always needed.

MDD Major Depressive Disorder

MDD is also called clinical depression. It is characterized by at least two weeks of persistent low mood, loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities, low self-esteem, and low energy. It is emphatically not sadness. It is a disabling condition that can respond well to treatment. It most often first appears in a person’s 20s, but it can show up at any time.

PDD/ Dysthymia – Persistent Depressive Disorder

Dysthymia is milder than major depression, but it is much more persistent.

Characteristics include low mood, lack of energy, and poor self-image. Persistence is its defining feature; clinicians diagnose PDD/dysthymia when a person has had symptoms for at least two (2) years. Do not wait for two years to get a diagnosis! You can be treated for symptoms regardless of how long they have lasted, and you deserve to be treated for these symptoms.

People who have PDD/dysthymia may also have bouts of depression. While it normally is diagnosed in early adulthood, it is often overlooked in children. At Saber Psychiatry, we take all disorders seriously. Because PDD/dysthymia often starts in childhood, people who have dysthymic may believe that low mood or irritability are parts of their characters.
