Sleep is not a luxury. Many people boast about how little sleep they get as if sleep were a weakness and a waste of time. We’ve heard people scoff that they can’t accomplish anything when they’re asleep. The truth is that good-quality sleep:

  • Decreases the likelihood of obesity
  • Makes it easier to lose weight and maintain weight loss
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Improves cardiovascular health, decreasing the likelihood of heart attacks
  • Prevents difficulties with short-term memory (STM)
  • Improves concentration
  • Improves or maintains productivity – spending more hours doing the same amount of work is not productive; it is frustrating
  • Improves academic and athletic performances
  • Decreases the likelihood of developing Type 2 Diabetes
  • Decreases the likelihood of developing depression or the severity of existing depression
  • Decreases inflammation
  • Increases positive emotions and social interactions
  • Greatly decreases the likelihood of traffic collisions and workplace injuries or errors
  • Improves cognitive performance, notably word-finding and other on-the-spot tests, memory, and creativity (the National Institute of Health – NIH – has interesting fact sheets on this topic)
  • Decreases the severity of acid reflux and the frequency/severity of migraines
  • Maintains healthy moods (children aren’t the only people who are irritable when they don’t get enough sleep)

We don’t have the time to explain all the benefits of healthy sleep, but we do need to emphasize that regular, high-quality sleep is as essential to physical and mental health as breathing and nutrition.

You are accomplishing something when you sleep. You are taking care of your health.

Two Common Sleep Disorders

Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder. Its most well-known characteristic is sudden daytime drowsiness and sleep. It is sometimes paired with cataplexy, which is a sudden loss of muscle tone triggered by strong emotions. While narcolepsy is chronic, we teach lifestyle changes and coping techniques, and – when needed – provide medications to manage the symptoms so that you lead a normal, fulfilling life. Narcolepsy does not mean the loss of your career or activities.

Like the other disorders we discuss on this page, narcolepsy is more complex and has more attributes than listed above. We have the experience and tools to treat your condition regardless of its complexity.

Bed-wetting is also called night-time incontinence or nocturnal enuresis. Until children are about 7 years old, bed-wetting is normal; it takes time to develop night-time bladder control. Bed-wetting is a concern when:

  • A child who has shown bladder control for several months starts wetting the bed again
  • It is paired with any of the following:
  • Adulthood
  • Unusual thirst
  • Blood in the urine
  • Other toilet difficulties
  • Unusual snoring
  • Chronic constipation
  • New medications (there are adult medications that irritate the bladder)

We will evaluate you for underlying physiological disorders as well as for anxiety and related problems.
