Saber Psychiatry is committed to providing the best care and treatment options for each patient. Sunshine is a natural mood booster that significantly impacts our mental health. When outdoors on a sunny day, the sunlight stimulates the brain to produce more serotonin, a hormone linked to mood elevation. These higher levels of serotonin help to heighten feelings of happiness, calmness, and improved focus. Insufficient sunlight can lead to a drop in serotonin levels, which may lead to seasonal depression, also called seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression that occurs at certain times of the year.
Sunlight helps regulate our sleep patterns by producing melatonin, a hormone that influences sleep-wake cycles. Getting enough natural light during the day, especially in the morning, can improve sleep quality, which benefits mental health. Additionally, sunlight exposure is crucial for the body’s vitamin D production, often called the “sunshine vitamin.”
To safely get more sunlight, spend at least 15-30 minutes outside daily, preferably in the morning when the sun’s rays are less intense. Engaging Spending time doing outdoor activities, like walking, gardening, or sitting in a sunny spot can help. Use sunscreen with a suitable SPF to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, and wear sunglasses to shield your eyes. If direct sunlight exposure is challenging, consider spending time in bright, naturally lit spaces indoors. By incorporating these practices, you can harness the positive effects of sunlight and boost your mental well-being.
