What Are Some of the Symptoms of Panic Disorder?

A person having a panic attack experiences a rapid heart rate.

Dr. Scricharan Moturi of Saber Psychiatry is committed to providing the best care and treatment options for each patient. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 31.1 percent of adults experience an anxiety disorder at some time in their lives.

The American Psychiatric Association describes Panic Disorder as a condition with recurrent panic attacks and an overwhelming combination of physical and psychological distress. During an attack, several of these symptoms occur in combination:

  • Palpitations, pounding heart or rapid heart rate
  • Sweating
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Feeling of shortness of breath or smothering sensations
  • Chest pain
  • Feeling dizzy, light-headed or faint
  • Feeling of choking
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Chills or hot flashes
  • Nausea or abdominal pains
  • Feeling detached
  • Fear of losing control
  • Fear of dying

Due to the intensity of the symptoms, individuals undergoing a panic attack often fear they are suffering from a heart attack or another critical medical issue. This fear frequently leads them to seek immediate care at an emergency room. Panic attacks can be predictable, triggered by specific phobias, or they might arise spontaneously without any discernible cause. Typically, panic disorder begins to manifest between the ages of 20 and 24. Additionally, panic attacks are commonly associated with other psychological conditions, including depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
