What Happens During a Mental Health Evaluation at Saber Psychiatry?

Comprehensive mental health evaluations are conducted to diagnose emotional, behavioral, or developmental disorders. At Saber Psychiatry, individuals participate in structured, answer-guided interviews and observations that review the client’s medical history and symptoms. Sometimes they involve laboratory tests.

Psychiatric evaluations may establish whether a diagnosis is present that requires treatment, collect data in support of a diagnosis, help create a treatment plan, assess the need for immediate intervention, or identify any longer-term issues that require follow-up care.

During the evaluation, we will ask questions about how the person feels, reacts, and processes emotions, hurts, and worries. We evaluate cognitive functions like memory and the ability to distinguish fantasy from reality. We will ask about changes in the ability to function at school or work and assess problem-solving skills, strengths, and weaknesses. We assess impulse control and ask about environmental stressors and life changes that may affect a person’s social and emotional functioning. We also look at changes in a person’s physical health that may weaken emotional regulation. The findings from the evaluation help us design a treatment plan unique to the individual.
