All people experience stressful situations at some point in their lives, however, sometimes stress becomes chronic. Rajita Sinha, Ph.D., director of Yale Medicine’s Interdisciplinary Stress Center, explains that the causes of chronic stress can include any situation where the individual feels they are incapable of changing their situation. Some examples are:
- Poverty
- A dysfunctional marriage or family
- A deeply dissatisfying job
What are the symptoms of chronic stress?
Sinha explains that there are cognitive, emotional, physical, and behavioral signs of chronic stress. However, if someone has three to five of these symptoms for more than several weeks, they might be suffering from chronic stress. Potential symptoms include:
- Aches and pains
- Insomnia or sleepiness
- A change in social behavior, such as staying in often
- Low energy
- Unfocused or cloudy thinking
- Change in appetite
- Increased alcohol or drug use
- Change in emotional responses to others
- Emotional withdrawal
