Understanding Sleep Disorders: When is it Time to Seek Treatment?

A person is having trouble sleeping through the night.

Saber Psychiatry evaluates and treats sleep disorders in children, teens, and adults ages 2 to 65. According to the Sleep Foundation, sleep disorders are a group of medical conditions that affect the normal pattern of sleep. They can disrupt a person’s ability to fall asleep, stay asleep, or achieve restorative sleep, leading to various physical, emotional, and cognitive problems. Some common sleep disorders include:

Insomnia: Insomnia is characterized by difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or experiencing restorative sleep despite having the opportunity to sleep. It can be caused by various factors, including stress, anxiety, medical conditions, medications, or lifestyle choices.

Sleep Apnea: Sleep apnea is a condition where a person’s breathing is repeatedly interrupted during sleep. There are two main types: obstructive sleep apnea, which occurs when the airway is blocked, and central sleep apnea, which is caused by a problem with the brain’s signaling to the muscles that control breathing. Sleep apnea can lead to daytime fatigue and other health issues.
