Should I Have My Teen Evaluated for Anxiety?

A stressed-out and anxious teen is seen.

Saber Psychiatry evaluates and treats mental health conditions in children beginning at age two.

All teen-aged youth go through periods of dread, fear, and worry, usually as a normal reaction to a stressor in their environment such as taking a test or starting a new school. They may have headaches, stomachaches, and other pain for no identifiable reason. Because young people may keep their worries to themselves, having them screened for anxiety can help.

The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion urges parents to take action when their child’s anxiety begins to interfere with everyday activities, and lists the following as some of the causes of anxiety:

  • Dealing with a stressful life situation, like a serious illness or a death in the family
  • Having problems at school, like being bullied by other kids
  • Experiencing trauma or abuse
  • Living with someone who has anxiety
  • Having a family history of anxiety
