The National Institutes of Health estimates that one in seven children (7.7 million) in the United States live with a mental health condition. Saber Psychiatry evaluates and treats mental health conditions in children beginning at age two. The stigma associated with mental illness does not have to be a barrier to talking with your child about their mental health. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), offers resources for helping families communicate with their children and normalizing the conversation.
NAMI encourages family members to discuss mental health conditions as one would discuss physical health conditions. Openly talking with your children helps to decrease this stigma. Also, NAMI suggests making your children aware that mental health conditions are common and that it is not an indication that something is wrong with them as a person.
Open the dialog and let them ask questions, if you can’t answer them, bring these questions with you to your mental health care provider and discuss them with your physician or therapist. The more you speak with your children, the better the discussions will get and as they mature, they will see you as a resource when they relapse or experience new symptoms.
