While our culture romanticizes sleep deficits and powering through on insufficient sleep, sufficient high-quality sleep is crucial to healthy functioning. Even emergency-room personnel, first-responders, and members of the military suffer when they don’t get at least 7 hours of sleep each day. We frequently hear that geniuses such as Thomas Edison excelled because they worked instead of getting several hours of sleep each night. We point out that (a) Edison took lengthy naps, so he did get plenty of sleep each day, (b) historical evidence reveals that even Edison’s lack of sleep is grossly exaggerated, and (c) Edison was a genius, so he produced genius-level output; it wasn’t just the hours that we worked.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) found that at least 40 million residents in the United States suffer from one or more sleep disorders. Over 60% of adults report having sleep difficulties more than one day a week. Most adults, alas, go undiagnosed and, therefore, untreated. Over 40% of these adults suffer from daytime sleepiness that impairs their daytime activities for at least a few days each month. Problems include micro-dozing while driving, lack of attention during meetings, and forgetting important appointments.
Additionally, the NSF found that 69% of children/adolescent’s experience at least one sleep problem a few nights or more per week.
