What to Expect from a Sleep Assessment

We’ll ask questions about your energy level, sleep practices, and whether you fall asleep during the day. Some problems are addressed by teaching good sleep hygiene, which includes regular bed and waking times, avoidance of caffeine & alcohol before bedtime, and reducing distractions.

A standard office visit is not always enough to diagnose sleep apnea, limb movement disorders, narcolepsy, sleepwalking, REM disorders, or other causes of sleep deficits.

Sleep studies are non-invasive overnight exams that allow doctors to monitor you while you sleep. You’ll go to a sleep center, which is often a set of dedicated hotel rooms near a hospital or other medical center.

Medical professionals use an EEG (electroencephalogram) on your scalp to measure brain activity, look for disruptions in REM (dream state) and/or non-REM sleep, and measure eye movements. They will also attach sensors (no needles) to measure oxygen levels, heart- and breathing rates, and body movements.

The Importance of Sleep

We still hear people boast about how little sleep they get. Sleep deprivation is not an accomplishment; there’s a reason that denying people sleep qualifies as torture.

Insufficient sleep contributes to:

  • Obesity, difficulty losing weight
  • Lowered immune responses
  • Irritability
  • Lack of concentration
  • Word-finding difficulties
  • Forgetfulness
  • Slower reaction times
  • Increased likelihood of being in a traffic collision
  • Clumsiness
  • Difficulty handling stress
  • Decreased creativity
  • Impaired decision making
  • Strokes, heart attacks
  • Migraines
  • Decreased ability to recover from injuries

Saber Psychiatry wants you to sleep well and, therefore, do well. Call us at 615-678-7839 for an appointment.
