Family therapy works with families/couples to nurture changes that help all people function with less struggle. Regardless of whether a problem seems to be an individual one (such as school phobia or an adult’s adjustment disorder), involving family members in therapy often benefits the client and the rest of the family.
Families are, after all, systems of individuals. We behave in relation to each other. Parents often remark that they need to treat their children differently just to reach similar outcomes. For example, giving one child a time-out may give him time to calm down and reflect on his behavior while giving his sister a time-out may just give her time to read a book without thinking about why she got sent to her room.
Additionally, if one person in a family is having a difficult time managing her/his emotions and behaviors, then everyone in the family feels it.
Saber Psychiatry defines “Family” practically rather than legally. People who have supportive, long-term roles are family members regardless of whether they are related by blood or marriage.
Family therapy helps individuals build stronger relationships, improve communication, and manage conflicts. Therapists notice how family members interact with each other, and it can guide them into improving these interactions when needed.
A subset of family therapy is parent training. Parenting is not easy, and there is no way to coast in this job. Not only is every child different, but each child develops – that is, changes – over time. Your sunny 5-year-old may be a surly 11-year-old. Your child has additional challenges in life, just as you do.
Parent training works with parents to figure out what techniques work best for their child and the rest of the family.
At Saber Psychiatry, we work with families of all types, and with people from ages 2 through 65. Call us at 615-678-7839.
