Saber Psychiatry Helps You Function: 615.678.7839
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIHM) estimates that about 20% of adults in the United States lives with a mental illness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about 17% of children (ages 2-18) lives with a mental illness. These illnesses vary from light to severe. While there are different types of challenges and illnesses, what they have in common is that they impair daily (or near-daily) functioning.
There’s an old joke where a person says, “I don’t suffer from a mental-health problem; I enjoy it.” It misses the point entirely. Mental-health illnesses (or challenges, or problems) hurt. People who have them struggle with social relationships, work/school, and daily activities.
An artist, physician, or mechanic who is very particular about her materials and her work does not suffer from OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder); she is a person who takes care to do excellent work. A person who cannot leave the house until he has checked the locks at least five times, in contrast, is unhappy, anxious, frequently distraught, and does suffer from OCD.
If you are having trouble functioning or are limiting your life so that you can avoid stresses, then you need and deserve help. Saber Psychiatry provides assessments and treatments for people from ages 2 through 65.
