Dr. Sricharan Moturi founded Saber Psychiatry in 2020 to evaluate and treat child and adult mental health conditions, including sleep disorders. One sleep disorder, narcolepsy, is characterized by excessive, uncontrollable daytime sleepiness. Here are the symptoms of narcolepsy from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NIH):
- (EDS) – is characterized by persistent sleepiness, regardless of how much sleep an individual gets at night. An overwhelming sense of sleepiness comes on quickly, and between these sleep episodes, individuals have normal levels of alertness.
- – sudden loss of muscle tone while a person is awake that leads to weakness and a loss of voluntary muscle control. It is often triggered by sudden, strong emotions such as laughter, fear, anger, stress, or excitement.
- – is the temporary inability to move or speak while falling asleep or waking up, usually lasting a few seconds or minutes. It occurs at the edges of sleep.
- – brief sleep episodes, sometimes no more than seconds at a time. The person falls asleep during an activity (e.g., eating, talking) and automatically continues the activity for a few minutes without conscious awareness of what they are doing.
