The Holidays are Not a Vacation from Mental Health Worries

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAM)), about 64% of people who have diagnosed mental illnesses (such as depression, anxiety, or attention challenges) report that holidays – with their shifting schedules and high expectations – make their conditions worse.

About 66% of people with mental illnesses report feeling lonely/isolated during the holidays.

Holidays are tough on people who do not have diagnoses as well. Because holidays are often family-focused, those who have experienced losses feel these losses more keenly.

Financial stresses and social stresses increase; travel, entertainment, and gift-giving are expensive, and we often face increased conflict as well as unrealistic expectations during the holidays.

If you are worried about the looming stresses, call our Saber Psychiatry office at 615.678.7839.

Self-Care During the Holidays

While making an effort to connect with others is part of the human experience – and part of being a member of a social network, it is good practice to give yourself breaks from the social whirl.

Self-care differs by person. You may need to take a walk, work on a hobby, connect with a friend over the phone/text, or read a book in a quiet corner. Practice healthy self-care by being as compassionate to yourself as you are to others.
