If you or someone you know is struggling with their mental health in Franklin, Saber Psychiatry can help. All children act out at times, but when your child’s behavior causes serious problems at home, school, or with peers and siblings, they may need professional help. Here is some information about disruptive behavior, or externalizing disorders, from the National Centers For Disease and Prevention (CDC):
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
Oppositional Defiant Disorder usually occurs in children between 8 and 12 years of age. These children are more likely to act out around people they know, like family members, care providers, or a teacher. These children demonstrate these behaviors more often than other children the same age.
Examples of ODD behaviors
- Often being angry or losing one’s temper
- Often arguing with adults or refusing to comply with adults’ rules or requests
- Often resentful or spiteful
- Deliberately annoying others or becoming annoyed with others
- Often blaming other people for one’s own mistakes or misbehavior
According to the CDC, starting treatment early is important. The first step is to speak with a healthcare provider and arrange for a comprehensive evaluation by a mental health professional to ensure the correct diagnosis is given.
