Psychiatric Evaluations
Your first visit to a psychiatrist will include an interview with a psychiatrist, a psychiatric social worker/clinician, or a licensed clinical examiner. Most evaluations last between 60 and 90 minutes, but there is no reason to be alarmed if the examination time is different.
If the person being assessed is a minor, then a parent or guardian will be included.
An assessment may result in additional testing, such as a sleep lab for a diagnostic study of any sleep disorders or other medical testing.
While the questions in an assessment may seem intrusive, they are important to the diagnosis and treatment.
Questions may include:
- Do you have any history of substance abuse?
- Has anyone in your family committed suicide?
- Do you have a family history of mental illness?
- What was your childhood like?
- Do you have any history of being abused?
- Have you had any significant medical conditions or surgery in the past?
- Do you have panic attacks?
- Have you been struggling to fall asleep or stay asleep?
- Have you ever been diagnosed or treated for any mental illness?
- Do you have any guns or access to guns?
Psychiatry, like other branches of medicine, relies on a patient’s self-description, so it is crucial that people be honest about their answers. The psychiatrist uses the information from the interview and any diagnostic tests to develop a diagnosis that best fits the symptoms.
Diagnoses include:
- Anxiety with or without panic disorder
- Attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity (AD/HD)
- Depression (dysthymia, major depression, bipolar depression)
- Eating disorders, body image disorders…
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Sleep disorders (insomnia, parasomnias, sleep apnea…)
The above categories are quite broad; a diagnosis, however, will be as specific as possible. Many disorders co-occur (such as PTSD and panic disorder).
The next step is to develop a treatment plan. Saber Psychiatry offers treatment in addition to assessments. Call us at 615.678.7839.
