Spotlight on Narcolepsy
Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder characterized by overwhelming daytime drowsiness and sudden attacks of sleep. People who have narcolepsy often find it difficult to stay awake for long stretches of time even with adequate nighttime sleep.
People with narcolepsy fall asleep without warning, anywhere, anytime. For example, you may be working or talking with friends and suddenly you nod off, sleeping for anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour. The first symptom of narcolepsy may be excessive daytime sleepiness, but it does not usually start with the person falling asleep.
People with narcolepsy fall asleep without warning, anywhere, anytime. A person may be in a work meeting, talking with friends, or even driving and then suddenly fall asleep.
Narcolepsy, therefore, can be dangerous. It is – at best – disruptive to daily routines.
Cataplexy is a sudden loss of muscle tone that is sometimes part of narcolepsy. Type I narcolepsy includes cataplexy. Type 2 narcolepsy does not. Cataplexy can cause symptoms that range from slurred speech to complete weakness of most muscles, and it may last up to a few minutes.
A person with Type I narcolepsy may experience only one episode of cataplexy a year or several.
Treatments focus on management as there is no cure.
Saber Psychiatry offers both medical and behavioral approaches (such as good sleep hygiene) to the treatment of narcolepsy. We look for complicating causal factors such as sleep apnea, strong emotional responses (which often trigger cataplexy), and other medications.
