This week’s spotlight is on chronic stress.
An acute, dramatic event or set of events can kick off post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a condition that has become better known over the past 40 or so years. PTSD may result from military service, being subjected to or witnessing violence in the home, school, or workplace, or any other specific event/set of events.
Life’s complexity, however, is not always bound up in discrete time periods. Chronic stress is constant and persists over years. It can overwhelm your body’s defenses, debilitating both physical and emotional resources. Causes of chronic stress include:
- Family dysfunction
- Deeply unsatisfying job
- Poverty
- Unhealthy environment (such as living under the threat of infection from COVID-19)
- Caring for ill or disabled family members
People suffering from chronic stress will show some combination of cognitive, physical, emotional, and behavioral symptoms. If you show 3 or more of the following symptoms for several weeks or longer, it is possible that you are suffering from chronic stress:
- Insomnia or excessive sleeping
- Aches and pains without known medical origin
- Change in social behavior (such as withdrawing from loved ones)
- Difficulty concentrating, decreased short-term memory (absent-mindedness)
- Low energy
- Distractibility, loss of focus, cloudy thinking
- Change in appetite
- Increased alcohol consumption
- Use/abuse of other drugs
- Irritable, emotionally reactive
- Addiction to gambling, internet use, substances
Chronic stress beats up the body as well as the emotional reserves. People suffering from chronic stress are at an increased risk of developing:
- Headaches, muscle aches
- Digestive problems
- Weight gain
- Metabolic syndrome
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Heart problems
- Exacerbation of asthma/respiratory problems, arthritis, and other kinds of joint pain
At Saber Psychiatry, we use an integrative approach to diagnose and treat chronic stress. We realize that failure to treat both the body and the mind is a failure to treat the condition.
Call us at 615.678.7839, so we can treat the whole person.
