Spotlight on Parent Training
If your child has ADD/HD, anxiety, or difficulties regulating emotions and behaviors, you and your family might benefit from parent management training, which is also called behavioral parent training, or – most simply – parent training.
Pre-school through elementary-school children often lack the language and the analytical abilities to manage change without concentrated help from their parents. Unfortunately, children also cannot explain (or even discover) what they need. Older children who show signs of ODD (oppositional defiant disorder) are similarly at sea as to how to control their behaviors.
Families are a system, so we work with the parents and the children/adolescents to teach children how to be aware of their behaviors and manage them.
Parent training helps children improve their behaviors and, therefore their relationships with family members, teachers, and other age-mates.
Parent training covers a range of behaviors and techniques, including:
- Positive reinforcement (punishment does not work for children in general, but those who are defiant will escalate their bad behaviors when faced with physical discipline or other punishment)
- Use of praise
- Consistency
- Use of specific, concise instructions
- Track children’s and adolescents’ behaviors – increase awareness for the parents and their children
- Learn which behaviors to ignore
- Planning for new situations
- Immediate yet noncoercive consequences
- Teach parents to reinforce steps towards desired behavior, not just the completed complex behavior
Parent training has immense scientific support. It is, we acknowledge, time-intensive and often difficult for the parents, but we are here to provide consistent, compassionate, and thorough support.
Parents who complete these programs report better behavior from their children, lower anxiety in themselves, and improved parent-child relationships.
Let Saber Psychiatry help you help your children.
