Types of Mental Health Therapy
Benefits of mental health therapy include strengthening problem-solving skills, self-care techniques, and perspective-taking.
No one type of therapy is right for all people or all challenges. Qualified therapists usually use more than one type of therapy in their practices, sometimes even with the same client. That said, there are different types of therapy, some of which are more suited to solving certain sets of difficulties rather than others.
Types include:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) teaches you to explore the thoughts that lead to self-destructive feelings and actions. CBT works well for people who have anxiety disorders or depression, and it may be combined with medication.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) uses CBT. It teaches clients to accept their negative emotions and learn to increase their tolerance for stress and be mindful of their emotional reactions. Therapists teach their clients how to improve coping skills.
Motivation Enhancement Therapy (MET) is most often used with clients who do not see their own behaviors as self-destructive; it helps them take objective looks at their lives, so they are motivated to make changes.
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is used when the patient should not, need not, or will not explore the origin of their difficulties. It concentrates on current circumstances and future behaviors/hopes. SFBT is most useful for clients who have substantial insight into their needs and motivations.
Trauma Therapy — Trauma includes enduring abuse, surviving a natural disaster, fighting in a war, or enduring loss. People who suffer from trauma when they’re young often stay at the emotional level they were in during the trauma. Even adults, however, can remain fixed at the emotional state they were in during this troubling time. There are several types of therapy to process trauma; what they have in common is that they help the client understand the results of the event(s), so they can grow past it.
Interpersonal Therapy helps clients overcome difficulties in relationships by working on communication skills, conflict resolution, and general coping skills. The “interpersonal” part includes the full set of relationships a person has, including work, family, romantic, and online.
Saber Psychiatry offers services to clients from ages 3 through 64 years.
