There is a popular and dangerous myth that when we sleep, we are unproductive and that we should go without sleep, so we accomplish more. This false should come with a medical warning. Every part of our lives benefits from sleep.
During sleep, our bodies save energy by operating at a lower rate, but we (bodies and brains) are still active including:
- Muscle repair
- Protein synthesis
- Tissue growth (parents know that infants and adolescents grow visibly overnight, but everyone benefits from tissue growth when recovering from injury, illness, or surgery)
- Hormone regulation
- The brain’s waste clearance system gets rid of excess neurotransmitters and other waste
- While the research is not yet clear, psychologists and psychiatrists believe that the brain[SS1] gets rid of unnecessary information while strengthening other information by moving it from short-term to long-term memory
- Brain activity in areas related to emotional health increases compared to waking hours
At Saber Psychiatry, we prize sufficient sleep and will do everything needed to ensure that you get sufficient, high-quality, consistent rest. When you get enough sleep you:
- Have better emotional regulation – are much less likely to react in ways that hurt yourself or others
- Do not see threats in non-threatening situations
- Perform better at basic tasks such as driving, word-finding, and decision-making
- Are more likely to maintain a healthy weight
- Feel less anxious
- Decrease your risk of dementia, heart disease, and digestive problems
Sleep health is health. At Saber Psychiatry, we treat your health seriously.
