What is a Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation?
When you suspect that you or your child/adolescent has a psychiatric disorder, we will work with you or your child/teen to determine the causes of the worrisome behaviors/feelings and develop a treatment plan.
Evaluations consist of structured, answer-guided interviews, observations, and – depending on the client’s medical history and symptoms – laboratory tests.
The evaluation considers:
- Affective functions – how you feel, react internally, whether you ruminate over worries, past behaviors and hurt feelings, emotional reactions, and anxieties, motivations, attitudes, beliefs, desires
- Cognitive functions – memory, ability to distinguish reality from fantasy, presence of hallucinations or delusions (even if you know that they are hallucinations or delusions, they are disturbing), changes in school or work functioning/abilities, problem-solving abilities, and strengths/weaknesses
- Conative functions – impulse control, drives, translation from thinking to doing, purposeful actions
- Environment – living or working in an unhealthy environment is bad for physical and mental functioning – at Saber Psychiatry, we recognize that there is no separation between the two
- Life changes – for children, the arrival of a sibling be incredibly disruptive—for anyone, changes in work, marital status, housing, and other events can be stressful even if they are desired changes
- Physical health – the human system is not compartmentalized, so changes in – for example – cardiac functioning can weaken emotional regulations and v.v.
Much of what we include in an evaluation depends on what you (or your minor child) tells us or shows us during the assessment.
