Do you have trouble sleeping? According to an article published by the Cleveland Clinic, an estimated 100 million Americans are not getting enough sleep. Sleep is a critical component of healthy brain function and overall physical health. The National Health Institute (NIH) reports that inadequate sleep may raise the risk of long-term health problems:
- Affect your heart and circulatory system, metabolism, respiratory system, immune system
- It can affect how well you think and remember
- How well your body reacts
- How well you can learn
- How you get along with others
The NIH offers these suggestions for practicing healthy habits during the day to get better sleep at night:
- Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day
- Try to get at least 30 minutes of sunlight
- Exercise regularly, but not within two to three hours of bedtime
- Don’t take naps after 3:00 pm
- Avoid caffeine and nicotine
- Avoid alcoholic drinks before bed
- Avoid large meals and drinks late at night
- Avoid medicines that delay or disrupt your sleep, if possible
